“You know how your life is perfect on Monday and then on Tuesday it all falls apart? That’s what happened to me seven years ago when a doctor called me and told me I had breast cancer,” says TV host Hoda Kotb. And music helped her through it. That’s why she got together with Cyndi Lauper and Sara Bareilles to create the song, “Truly Brave” — and the accompanying music video is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Proceeds from the song — a mashup of Sara’s song “Brave,” and Cyndi’s classic “True Colors” — will help fund the research for pediatric cancer, as well as spread awareness about the devastating disease. For more info and how to donate, check out CrowdRise.com/Hoda.

The music video shows the young patients at The Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia coming together to paint and “show their true colors” — and they are not afraid to let them show. Hearing the great song, and seeing the kids smiling and having fun while painting on each other will send goosebumps up and down your body.

“Cancer is difficult to endure as an adult,” Hoda said in a heartfelt message on Today. “I can only imagine how tough it would be for a child – it’s such a grownup disease. [...] An estimated 10,450 new cases and 1,350 cancer deaths are expected to occur among children (ages 0-14) in 2014. I want to do everything I can to prevent cancer from taking these young lives. I’m not a doctor. I’m not a nurse, but I want to do what I can.”

Sara, Cyndi, and Hoda are also planning a concert for the affected kids to lift their spirits. The song was released at a great time — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
